Department of Geosciences
Alumni and Friends
The Geosciences faculty greatly values and appreciates our on-going relationships with department alumni and friends. In particular, we are interested in developing and strengthening professional partnerships through which we can improve the educational experiences of our students and the value of a MTSU Geosciences degree. Be sure to check us out on social media by clicking on the Facebook or Instagram icons on the page.
We invite all of our alumni and friends to share with us their ideas as to how we can improve our department programs. Please feel free to come by the Department to meet with the faculty and students. We also invite geoscience professionals to give guest presentations in our classes so that our students may hear about the life of ‘real world’ geoscientists. If you are in the Murfreesboro area and interested in speaking to one of our classes, please contact Dr. Henrique Momm.
It is very important to us that we have current contact information for our alumni and friends. If you have recently changed your email address, please send the new address to Karen Wolfe. We also would greatly appreciate an update of your most recent activities!
Alumni and friends interested in making financial contributions to the Department or the Geosciences scholarship funds are asked to do so through the Support Geosciences web site.

Alan Brown:
"I did not start out in college thinking I would be a Geology major. In fact, I had little idea what a Geologist even was. It was my first class in Geology that ignited my love of Geology and Paleontology. I had a strong interest in Paleontology while in school but decided to focus instead on environmental geology because the job market was much better. After getting my Master’s degree I worked as an environmental consultant for 7 years.
Then, in 2005, I was hired as an instructor at Middle Tennessee State University. Once I started at MTSU my interest in Paleontology was rekindled. In the summer of 2009, I was invited to go on a dinosaur dig in Montana and I have returned to Montana to dig up dinosaurs every summer since. I volunteered at two museums in the area but they both closed. I then got together with a small group, and we decided to start a new museum. This museum is Earth Experience the Middle Tennessee Museum of Natural History in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, which opened in 2014. It is my passion and takes almost all my free time."
